This tutorial should help you to do the first step creating a website with Contao and show you on a very basic level how to begin. It helps you get answers of the questions ... where to I begin with my Webpage? What are the first steps.

The result of the tutorial will be a web page with two columns, a header and a footer with some pages and articles.
The requirements are:
*Overall with: 960px
*Alignment: center
*High of header: 50px
*With of left column: 220px
*High of footer: 25px

=Requirements=
*Contao needs to be installed with success
*[http://www.contao.org/installation.html Installation] needs to be checked with the [http://www.contao.org/configuring-the-live-server.html#system-check-tool system-check] tool and removed from all errors if there are some.
*The Example Webpage "Musicacademy" will NOT be imported while installing Contao
*Knoledge of HTML and CSS

=Preparations=
==Files==
All files(pictures, documents, Video- Audio-files ...) where belong to the web-project, are stored in the /tl_files/ folder. To get a good overview, you can store the files in several sub-folders. With the integrated [File_Manager] ('''Backend-System --> File manager'''), you can create the structure as needet. For example we put all the files for the Webcontent in a subfolder named "firstsite/theme". As this here is a very simple project we could create the CSS File in the Subfolder "theme". We name it layout.css (more later). The full path will be tl_files/fistsite/theme/.

==Templates==
Templates (check also [[edit_templates]]) are stored in the folder /templates/. In the '''Back-end''' you can find the templates in '''Layout --> Templates'''. Similar as with the files, you can create a sub-folder named "project-name". In our case it is /templates/firstpage/.

=Theme=
We do create in the [[Theme_Manager]] a new "theme" with the name "fistsite". With this, we do have the controll over all actions where are needed to display a wep-project. This are files, stylesheets, frontend-modules and page-layouts.

When you create a "theme" you have to give a name and also mention the autor. Below you make settings to wich folders the "theme" belongs. Also the template folder can be selected. If you have already a screen-shot of your web-project you will be able to select it to show a small picture.

If you save your "theme" you will see a overview of it with several functions you can access. ==Stylesheets==
You can create a Stylesheet for your own theme. On the theme-manager by the theme "fistsite" you have the CSS button. Within this button click you will open a overview where you see all your style-sheets for the theme you selected. With "new style-sheet" you create the necessary file.

It is also possible to import a CSS file. You just have to put it in the tl_files. As I mentioned while explaining the "File Manager" under the section "Files" when you put your CSS files in this Folder, you will also get it while you do a export of your theme.

==Page Layout==
On the next step we will create a [[Page_layout|Pagelayouts]]. Back in the theme-manager on the theme "fistsite" we have to click on the "page-layout" button (second last one on the right). Now it is up to create a new Layout and we name it default. As mentioned in the [[#Introduction|Introduction]] we do the following configuration:

==Modules Part 1==
The theme just needs the modules. For our example page we do just need one module. It is a Navigation Module. But because we not have a site-structure yet, we will finish this part in the section (see [[#Modules_Part_2|Modules Part 2]]). The module "article" makes an exeption. It not has to be created by yourself. The system does this Module automaticly. You just have to thell the system where you want to display the Articles. In the section "Frontend-Module" you can select where to display it. We need it for the example-page in the "main column".

=Site structure=
The [[Site_structure|Site structure]] you can find in the ''' "Back-end" ''' under the section ''' "Layout" '''. The Site-structure makes the hierarchy of the "Articles" in the Website. Contao has a "Multi-domain" functionality. So, first you have to create the Start-point of the website. The Page-type you select here is the Website-root.

Page Alias is not really needed to fill up, then Contao is creating a unic one on it self when you let this field blank.

For the Startsite/Home it makes sens to use the "Page-alias" index. Then you will get the URL as mydomain/index.html when you use [[Rewrite_URL|Rewrite URL's]]

The advantage is, that when you let fields free, Contao will use it's own taxonomy. As example the Page Name ''' "My First Site" ''' will be made with small letters and for the blank it will be used a dash (''' my-first-site ''').
The URL will look much more standardized in the end.}}

=Firefox with Chatzilla=

This Howto limits itself to the Firefox add-on Chatzilla. [http://www.getfirefox.com Firefox] is a widely known browser and available for the lion's share of all operating systems.
If you are an advanced IRC user and join the channel with another software: Please feel free to add your tutorial and share your knowledge with the world!

==Install Chatzilla==
Firefox provides a built-in installer for add-ons to enhance itself. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16/ and click 'Add to Firefox'. After the installation you need to reboot Firefox.

==Configure Chatzilla==
After the installation and the reboot of Firefox we need to configure some basic settings to connect to the Freenode network and get the chatroom started.

The add-ons can be found in the add-on manager (Navigation bar Tools --> Add-ons).

Choose the plugin 'Chatzilla' within the add-on manager and click on <nowiki>'settings'</nowiki>.

After clicking on the tab 'General' you will find the fields 'Description', 'Nickname' and 'Username'.
Add your username to both, the Nickname and Username. Description is optional and up to you what you want to write there.
Then confirm all the windows.

==Use Chatzilla==

Chatzilla is launched via Tools --> Chatzilla.

Chatzilla has saved some IRC networks by default. To connect to a server of the Freenode network, we click on the link 'Freenode' or type the following command in the textfield:

=Translations of the Contao Community Documentation=

The ccd currently is available in three languages. German (http://de.contaowiki.org), Englisch (http://en.contaowiki.org) and French (http://fr.contaowiki.org).
In every article there should be a section at the bottom of the left side menu listing the languages the current article has been translated to.
If there is a language missing and the reader feels confident enough to provide a translation to the missing language please do so.

A small howto follows:
==Determining the title==
Before starting a translation one has to determine what the name translates to in the other language.
Taking the fictive article "Example" (The word "Example" translates to "Beispiel" for German) the article to create on de.contaowiki.org should be named <nowiki>http://de.contaowiki.org/Beispiel</nowiki>.

==Translating the text==
After translating the name and opening the article in edit mode on the other side the translation continues with the text (the hardest part).
One should keep in mind that the articles linked to in the original language will most likely have different names in the local language. One is encouraged to search them in the local language and update the name of the link accordingly. If there does not yet exist an article covering the linked topic, one will translate the name of the topic and link to it nonetheless. This will produce a red link to the aricle and place a new link within the [[Special:WantedPages|wanted pages]]. Translating these pages also is even better.

==Placing links to other languages==
After the article has been translated, the wiki must be told where it can find the translation.
This is done using Interwiki-notation.

In the German section the page "Beispiel" has to be edited and the following has to be added just after the categories:

Goal of the ccd is to build an information portal by voluntary authors. The name ccd is an acronym for "Contao Community Documentation" nad the suffix "en" stands for the English section of it. A [[w:en:Wiki|Wiki]] is an [[w:en:Website|Website]] where everyone can easily and (almost) without previous knowledge can edit pages directly within the [[w:en:Web_browser|Webbrowser]].

The contents of ccd are free. They are not only available free of charge but may be used and copied, as long as the source and authors are mentioned, thanks to the [[w:en:Creative Commons|Creative-Commons]]-License under which the articles are released.</div>

Contao was started in the year 2006 under the name TYPOlight.

Starting with release 2.9 (2010) the project is continuously developed under the name "Contao Open Source CMS".

Contao is following consequently the management of content within an container principle.

The hierarchy is as follows: Page => Article => Content element.

Therefore pages consist of articles, which are organized on a webpage in layout sections as "left column", "right column" and "main column".
Each of these articles are containers of content elements like texts and images for example.

This method of organizing and managing content allows beginners to work with the system straight forward and very intuitively.

==Install Chatzilla==
Firefox provides a built-in installer for add-ons to enhance itself. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16/ and click 'Add to Firefox'. After the installation you need to reboot Firefox.

==Configure Chatzilla==
After the installation and the reboot of Firefox we need to configure some basic settings to connect to the Freenode network and get the chatroom started.

Chatzilla has saved some IRC networks by default. To connect to a server of the Freenode network, we click on the link 'Freenode' or type the following command in the textfield:

The Contao subversion repository is available at http://svn.typolight.org/trunk

If you want to fetch everything, including all released versions, you have to omit the suffix "trunk".

===Tortoise SVN with Windows===
Download the client from http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads.
After the installation is complete, you'll find an new entry in the Windows Explorer context menu named "TortoiseSVN Checkout".
After clicking on that one, you will be prompted for a subversion repository URL. Enter http://svn.typolight.org/trunk to get the latest revision.
Finally click "OK" and TortoiseSVN will check out all files to the selected directory.

To update this working copy to the latest revision you do not have to check out trunk anymore.
Instead you can use "TortoiseSVN Update" from the same context menu (You have to be within your working copy to make this menu entry available).
Using update instead of checkout only transfers the files changed since the last checkout/update.

===Console client "svn" using Linux or cygwin===
Open a console window to get into bash and create a new directory where you want the sources to end up.
mkdir contao
cd contao

Issue the following command to perform a checkout:
svn co http://svn.typolight.org/trunk

To update the working copy to the latest revision, you only have to update (up) it.
To do this, hop into the directory containing the sources and issue the following command:
cd contao
svn up
